1.
Her blood was shed under the sun, They should have known what they had done! Out there the tree in silence grows; It has a name that no one knows. You hear me, you hear me, Lord Vernon! Beneath the tree she lies alone, And for her death you will atone! Born of the Earth, a heart of clay; Cursed to return, your debt to pay. You hear me, you hear me, Lord Vernon! A gift to see, a dread to know; Into the earth we all must go! And from the Earth we watch the sky; At break of dawn the dead shall rise! You hear me, you hear me, Lord Vernon!
2.
Luz is bright and Luz is pure, and Luz's people will endure, oh! Clap your hands and Raise your booze, For no one ever [Various drunken cries] Dies in Luz! Elyo's bright and Elyo's is pure, and He's a brave one, that's for sure, oh! Shake his hand and Buy him booze, 'Cause with ol' Elyo [Various drunken cries] We can't lose! He'll take Vernon By the hand and Lead him down to our bright land, oh! Vernon knows we're Still alive Oh we the Luzer's [Various drunken cries] Will survive!
3.
Verse 1:We're going home... today, And we'll never be the same! We have found... the way, And received a brand new name! Refrain: El-Sed'ah, he will go! (He will go!) The seeds of life he will sow! (He will sow!) The spirits bending low! (Bending low!) There's no way you can say no! (Can say no!) Verse 2: So come my friends... away To the land of our last birth! It's there we shall... remain, And to him, we'll prove our worth! Refrain Verse 3: Our Hidekel... won't end-- In the Lady is our trust! El-Sed'ah will... descend,  And then he shall dwell with us!
4.
Hum-Habble 00:20
Hum-Habble came to Luz one day to steal all our things away! Ermillus saw, upheld the law, and hit Hum-Habble in the jaw! The men all hit him; one, two, three! They hung him up on Bakol's Tree. They stripped him bare And left him there-- This kind of killing's only fair!
5.
She's lurking there behind the still For little children, so to kill; The naughty ones will fit the bill! Oni'ah's approaching. So put two tassels on their crib; Taketh less than you shall give; Do it so that they might live! Oni'ah's approaching. She'll snatch your children in their sleep; Take them to her hellish keep; Butcher them like little sheep! Oni'ah's approaching. Now only one thing is for sure: Neighbor's wives all know when you're Afraid to be in bed with her! Oni'ah's approaching.
6.
When the years are but weeks, and stone bleeds and wood speaks, The Presence descends; she'll find what she seeks. She weeps for her children Who've ceased to survive. She cries to those in waiting; Those still left alive;      That the Earth will give birth to the dead. Where do they go? To Aravoth's keep? Do they drink from his fountain? Or are they asleep? None know where they lie-- The dead of our land-- But surely the righteous Now sleep in her hand.      And the earth will give birth to the dead. A light comes from the tombs, a voice from the caves: "The wicked and righteous will wake from their graves They'll wander the earth, Their bodies set free, To Akhuzan's Temple; The place of the Tree.      See the earth will give birth to the dead. "At the banquet they'll eat-- the monsters, their meal-- They'll be there forever to give and to heal. The killed and killers Will sit side by side. There's nowhere left to run; No place left to hide      When the earth will give birth to the dead. "Some will be forgiv'n, and some will forgive; And those unrepentant will be forced to live. No slave no master; All men are but one. In the land of the Presence The Day has begun      Yes the earth will give birth to the dead."
7.
The lights have gone out in the sky; The trees are growing dark. The long dead goblins come alive, Waiting in their wretched hive... The lights have gone out in our eyes. They've taken all the stars away-- Look up to the empty wind! The Lady in the stars is gone, As distant as Hidekel's dawn... She's taken all our stars away. What once was here is far and past; The clatter of the workmen ceased. No cause to go and wage a war; Nothing left to win no more... What once was here is gone and past For El-Sed'ah is gone and died-- The orchards have no fruit of leaves! ... And the caves are a place Where the demons are; Their darkened eyes, our only star... Since Bakol's gone and died... Since Fred is gone and died... Since Rusty's gone and died...

Said Behemoth to Leviathan In the land of Dundayin: "Your head I will be killin', I'll feed you to my chillun'; In the land of Dundayin we're done dyin'!" Said Behemoth to Leviathan Standing o'er the pit: "You've made this land a wreck, My cat will eat your neck, Now fall into the pit you dirty piece of--" Whoop!"

Vernie 01:26
Vernie is my little worm; He's always listening in my ear. And all throughout my little day, Vernie's sitting there to hear. I know I shouldn't kick and fight, I know I shouldn't be afraid, 'Cause Vernie's come to walk with me, And ever since that's where he's stayed. And when it's time to go to sleep, The cold wind blows and darkness stares. But I don't let it bother me, 'Cause Vernie is a worm who cares. Now if, by chance, I die or slip, He'll be with me all the while. 'Cause Vernie is my little worm, And I am his little child.

Khalkedras 01:50
All praise be to the king of Tyre! We praise him with harp and lyre! He sits atop his throne of gold; He's governed there since ages old. Snakes of brass are standing by; Ten Khalkedras fill the sky. The Vineyard lies in his domain, And rumor says he's less than sane; For he who carries El-dah's key Is ripe with pure iniquity! The facts of which we now discuss; Khalkedras brought them to us. Now Aravoth is quite displeased-- He'll bring the kind down on his knees. He'll smash his face and strike him dumb, He'll leave him until Shiloh comes! You, Great Lord, have met your end; Khalkedras your only friend. All praise be to the king of Tyre! For he has made himself a liar! Sunken in the depths of sea; This is what's become of thee! You have razed this sacred place; Ten Khalkedras hide their face.
12.
There's a tree in the garden; land east of the earth. Near the Geth and the Dilmun, the land of our birth. We have no fear as you draw near. So hear: "Walk in the garden, my Lord" As I sat by the river awaiting your love, There stood a Light-man sent from above. "He is near," the man said. "He will fill you with dread." I said: "Walk in the garden, my Lord." So I wait in the garden, but my Lord is not here. So I posed to the Light-man, "When will he draw near?" "He has hidden his face and abandoned this place. Give chase!" "Walk in the garden, my Lord" So I walked from the garden to the edge of the Sea, and I found him there waiting; he was angry with me. "What have you come here for? Know I need you no more!" Therefore: "Walk in the garden, my Lord" "Sir your children are hungry, you are not by their side. And they cry for their mother, the Presence, your bride. "Was she ever enough? Now Oni'ah's my love! Be off!" "Walk in the garden, my Lord" "You remember creation? It was not long ago. When we brought forth the heavens; the rain and the snow? "It's my earth," the Lord said, "And it's better off dead." I said: "Walk in the garden, my Lord" "Voices cry out in Ramah, they weep in Elkee, For their mother is absent; that mother is me." "Abbadon serves them right! They'll be silenced by night." "Not quite: Walk in the garden, my Lord." "No, my Lord, I won't leave you, I will open the doors. They will be in your Presence, for the choice is not yours." "Now if you only knew..." I will stay here with you. "Walk in the garden, My Lord."

about

The book that these folk songs are based on (ELYO by Jesse Caldwell-Tautges) can be found in the Kindle book store (Bandcamp won't let me post a link). They all play a rather integral part in making the culture of Hevel seem vibrant and ever changing.

To give you a quick synopsis of what the book is about, think of a late 1800's, industrial age mining town where the miner's are disregarded by their mining baron, Lord Vernon, and bad blood has been brewing for the last fifteen years. He seems to them a religious fanatic--all of the gold that they mine is being using it to rebuild his temple, and subsequently, to him, the miners seem to be a bunch of uncultured hicks who don't understand anything. Finally though, after a heroic feat of saving two miners from a cave-in, Elyo, a giant, is asked to be an ambassador between the mining people of Luz and Lord Vernon. The only problem is... Elyo doesn't talk, and it is only through the complaining of his dwarf brother Elias that they are able to receive a hearing with Lord Vernon. Little do they know, however, that the rare gem that caused the cave-in will soon set into motion both a metaphysical and spiritual war among the "heathens" of Luz, their "absent" mining Baron, and the indiscernible powers of old. How they go about fulfilling that scripture... well, I guess you'll just have to wait & see.

I aimed to capture the folk essence in most of these--keeping the human expression as well as faults in them--but I also tried to make them telling of the atmosphere in which the characters would find themselves in as a sort of auditory-cinematic experience.

There's also a bit of a funny story to this album which is that half way through the production, I was forced to relocate my recording location. I was kicked out of my recording closet because it wasn't "COVID Safe" despite the fact that there was only ever one person in there at a time and it was locked to the general public. So, yeah, not exactly ideal since some of the songs now have a radiator in the background, but we tried to make-do with it nonetheless.
